AstraZeneca’s FluMist vaccine won FDA approval late last week for at-home administration, making it the first “take-out” flu vaccine that doesn’t need to be administered by a healthcare provider.
I worked in health insurance leadership for years and recall FluMist coming off the recommendations schedule. This new approval is concerning for so many reasons.
Any health care provider must seek legally valid informed consent before administering a vaccine. In my experience this rarely happens and in the event of a vaccine causing harm a legal challenge could probably be mounted on that basis. I wonder if home administration is a cynical means of sidestepping this legal liability?
